Rachel Maddow owns Republican pundit who says women don’t actually make less money than men.
This was pretty beautiful. (If you’re wondering what the president’s done for equal pay, Lilly Ledbetter can tell you.)
Really interesting review of Rachel Maddow’s book, Drift, about contemporary warfare. It makes such a good point about how we’ve somehow been at war for ten years and counting, but these wars don’t have an impact on every single citizen’s everyday life to the extent that the world wars did and that needs to change.
The CIA and JSOC have become largely unaccountable branches of the military. Drone warfare has lowered the cost of war even further. And the reserves are no longer really reserves. They’re practically full-time soldiers.
And the worst part is that all of this is virtually invisible to most of us. The vast bulk of the civilian population, especially among the college-educated elites who run the country, doesn’t serve in the military and never has. In a lot of cases, we barely even know people who have. When we go to war, there’s no WWII-style rationing to worry about, there’s no draft, and there aren’t even any taxes to pay. It’s all free! Is it any wonder that we fight so many wars?

Are Michigan Republicans Violating the State’s Constitution?
Rachel Maddow explains how Michigan Republicans are putting radical laws into immediate effect under emergency provisions for 546 of the 566 bills passed since 2011, rather than going into effect 90 days after the end of the legislative session. But the emergency provision states you need a 2/3 majority to do so, which…they didn’t have, yet stated they did anyway.
This is outrageous. The courts must fix this immediately.
Unfortunately, this does not surprise me in the least. The fact this has been able to go on for so long is a bit shocking, and I can only hope these illegal actions are rectified immediately, and the people in charge held accountable by the people in Michigan.
You’re bad at this, Rush Limbaugh. You don’t even understand how babies are made, let alone how people can have sex without making a baby, and you would like the government to take over decision-making on these issues on your say-so. And you don’t get it. You biologically don’t get it. You just don’t understand it. You were absent that day. - Rachel Maddow
I love this response.

Maddow really is a breath of fresh air.
“Policy matters.”
benton harbor is the first town to be taken over by michigan’s “emergency financial manager” law. basically the town’s elected officials no longer have any power over any decisions being made. who was selected to be benton harbor’s emergency financial manager? a guy who formerly sat on the board of directors for a company that wants to build a private golf course on benton harbor’s town park. some people might call that a conflict of interest. others call it opportunity. these are “small government” republicans at their finest.
TAX CUTS VS UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS
“The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office did the math—literally, they did the math on the various policy options that are being considered right now, to deal with our problem and our friend, this giant number. They crunched the data on a bunch of policy propositions to figure out which of those policies would have the best net effect on the economy in terms of jobs. At the very top, the single most effective thing that they studied that Washington can do to reduce unemployment—the very top? Increasing aid to the unemployed.
Why is that the most effective thing Washington can do? Because people who are unemployed are broke. So, if the government gives them money, they will turn around and spend it. They‘ve got to. They will spend that money instead of saving it, because they cannot afford to save it. And spending that money increases consumer demand, which is good for companies that supply that demand, which means those companies get more busy and they grow, which means they hire more people and so on. That‘s the whole idea of stimulus.
Unemployment benefits aren‘t just handy for people who paid into unemployment insurance and lost their jobs, unemployment benefits are handy for all of us, because they are very, very stimulative. They are very good for the economy as a whole. Aid to the unemployed is the single most effective policy that the nonpartisan CBO studied.
Of the 11 different policies they evaluated, the single most effective one for creating jobs: unemployment benefits. The single least effective one for creating jobs was, oh, reducing income taxes. Yes. So, again, to be clear, most effective, best thing for the economy: unemployment benefits. Least effective in terms of what‘s good for the economy: reducing income taxes.”

This is just so childish and ridiculous. Maddow on the organized protests being directed at Democrats going back to their districts. This harassment and intimidation is what we are getting as debate.
They were actually talking about this on NPR today on my ride home from work, interviewing some of the senators who were being mobbed. There is something about this that I find so vile and disgusting, it kind of shuts me down. What are people coming to when we can’t even have proper civic discourse? Isn’t that what’s supposed to be so great about America? The opportunity for civic discourse? And yet these people are completely trampling over these freedoms and rights, completely disregarding the principles of this country. And yet they feel that what they’re doing is in America’s best interest. I don’t understand people like this. I can’t understand what it must be like to be so incredibly close-minded that you can’t even listen to reason and have a civilized debate with someone with opposing viewpoints. I think the real kicker is that these people don’t even know what they’re protesting. They obviously have absolutely no idea what the government is proposing in terms of health care reform, because their arguments are completely invalid in relation to what is happening within the government. If you have opposing viewpoints, you should definitely be allowed to voice them, but not when what you’re protesting is only some skewed version of what is *actually* happening and you don’t even have the decency to learn the facts.
the whole thing is just completely ridiculous and is nothing but harmful. How can so many people believe that what they are doing is good?
Rachel Maddow on the White House’s ‘Don’t Ask Don’t Tell’ Flip Flop & Correction
haha. I love this dyke.
i would definitely go lesbo for her
Rachel Maddow asks Colin Powell if “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” should be repealed.
He lays out how important it is to hear from top military ranks, but illustrates his openness to “reexamining” the policy.
Also, Clifford Alexander former Secretary of the Army, in the follow up, is very eloquent in laying out why this is just a dumb fucking policy.
I am so straight (?) for Rachel Maddow
jesus christ is she an adorable hipster boy-woman
