Are Michigan Republicans Violating the State’s Constitution?

Rachel Maddow explains how Michigan Republicans are putting radical laws into immediate effect under emergency provisions for 546 of the 566 bills passed since 2011, rather than going into effect 90 days after the end of the legislative session. But the emergency provision states you need a 2/3 majority to do so, which…they didn’t have, yet stated they did anyway.

This is outrageous.  The courts must fix this immediately.

Unfortunately, this does not surprise me in the least. The fact this has been able to go on for so long is a bit shocking, and I can only hope these illegal actions are rectified immediately, and the people in charge held accountable by the people in Michigan.

Drive You Home - The Juliets

This band was love at first listen when I first heard them open for a pseudo-friends band a couple years ago very shortly after they had released their first album. I know I’ve posted tons of their stuff before, but this song just came on and it completely destroys me every time, for reasons I have no comprehension of. SORRY I FEEL THINGS

I feel reasonably certain the GOP will get their shit together by November, but in the meantime, I’m really enjoying this clusterf*ck of craziness

Look who they are giving us now. What do they think, we’re stupid?” Scott Kanas, who works at a Chrysler truck plant in Michigan, said, talking about Mitt Romney.

“Now he’s Michigan’s son, before he told us to kiss his ass. He has no loyalty. His loyalty is to the almighty buck.

The Ruins Of Detroit

A seven year project from two French photographers who have been taking images of Detroit, Michigan, USA. Their project beautifully displays the city’s decaying buildings, once stunning classical venues, factories, hotels and municipal edifices.

These fantastic images show the decline of society in a city once the economic hub of the industrial USA. They show the decline of once great halls of entertainment, employment and human interaction that now sit decrepit and dying.

The work from Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre can be seen on display at the Wilmotte Gallery, Lichfield Studios in London until May and also online here http://www.marchandmeffre.com/detroit/

That house in the first photo… it probably used to be so awesome.

Not for the first time, I find myself not in Michigan on this, the most glorious of days, Pączki Day

I realize this probably sounds a bit ridiculous, but this is the day I tend to feel the most homesick and really miss living in Michigan. Growing up in an area with lots of Polish bakeries, and myself coming from a very Polish family (on my mom’s side), it was a pretty special day. My parents have ALWAYS been ungodly healthy and I grew up in a household where there were never ANY snacks of any kind (the exception: popcorn. WITHOUT BUTTER. And sometimes, on very special occasions, ice cream.) But on Pączki Day, my parents would let me and my brother indulge on the delicious 1200 calorie treats and you would think it was the second coming of Christ up in there.

However, I have faith that even given the utter lack of authentic Pączki anywhere around, I will persevere and find a way to indulge my fat face.

Disturbing interior of the Frankenmuth Bavarian Inn, Michigan

I remember going here once as a kid.  I recall my parents going on and on about how good the chicken was.  The whole town of Frankenmuth is weirdly occupied with Christmas all year.

!!! Frankenmuth is a completely ridiculous place, but it’s also rather amazing. While it is known mostly as a very German Christmas town (thanks to Bronners, which is the world’s largest Christmas store open year-round (and that is NOT an exaggeration)), my family has gone there several times for Thanksgiving, and they remain some of my most favorite memories. There’s a lot of cool shops, artists, and beautiful horses to make for an enjoyable day, and is nice to visit in every season.

The best part about shopping at Meijer (besides the fact it isn’t Walmart)?
The mini-cart.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say shopping at Meijer is probably what I miss most about living in Michigan (/the midwest), and trying to explain its amazingness to other people who have never been to one can be quite difficult. I’ve also been shocked to realize that other stores don’t have mini-carts, and I just don’t understand why not.

A family’s public response to the mayor of Troy, MI over her recent homophobic comments. I worked in Troy for several years, and have lived most of my life in the general area, and was rather shocked when the mayor updated her Facebook status to read “I think I’m going to throw away my ‘I Love New York’ carrying bag now that queers can get married there” (and so were a lot of other people)

This is a pretty good list (with audio), but a little disappointing at the lack of depth. In addition to the obvious choices of Sufjan Stevens and the White Stripes, I am super happy to see Mason Proper also on the list.

“For years, the US city of Detroit has been scene as the emblem of industrial decay, but there are some companies that are bringing work back to the city.

There has been a significant growth of “green shoots”, or businesses that develop and build more environmentally friendly technologies than had been built there in the past.”

The Detroit Zoo’s iconic polar bear exhibit is now just a click away.

Web users can now take a step-by-step virtual tour of one of Detroit’s biggest attractions, along with sweeping images of the giraffe and gorilla habitats.

“So many of the most interesting spots in the world, cars can’t go,” says Google staff mechanical engineer Daniel Ratner. “But they’re places that people want to see.”

So Ratner and his team developed a tricycle to capture images in places with a tighter fit.

Google Street View made its biggest dump yet last week of imagery captured by Street View trikes, adding a couple hundred locations in 22 countries.

The Google Street View team recorded the Detroit Zoo over two sunny days in July, Harper says.

Google’s trike was able to make it past all the zoo’s exhibits except the lion habitat, which was under construction this summer, he says.

Despite worries about making the zoo visible for free online, officials decided having it would only increase interest.

“Ultimately it wasn’t about what we want to hold back and what we want them to pay for,” Harper says. “We want to show off how beautiful this zoo is.”

The Detroit Zoo really is beautiful, and I miss it dearly. I also happened to be volunteering there the days the Google trikes were there!

Despite our struggling economy, downtown Detroit is on an upswing — finally.

With its abandoned storefronts and hollowed-out, Art Deco-era office buildings serving as the image of urban decay, the commercial district is wooing new businesses through public and private incentives. The migration into the city is occurring even as the city itself faces a potential cash shortfall by next spring.
In the last two and a half years, new people working downtown increased by more than 10 percent, or 9,000 new jobs, according to the Detroit Economic Growth Corp. The biggest influx has been in the last 12 months, lured by office rents well below those in other major cities.

Good news, Detroit! Let’s all celebrate by helping their economy more. Grab a copy of eLmatic. Now!

The City of Detroit v. Nickelback

newsweek:

Apparently Detroit Lions fans are so appalled by the decision to have Nickleback — yes, Nickleback — as the halftime show of their Thanksgiving Day game against the Green Bay Packers, they’ve started a petition, which is, well, kind of hilarious. As UMich grad student/Michigan native/Lions ticket holder Dennis Guttman explains it:

This game is nationally televised, do we really want the rest of the US to associate Detroit with Nickelback? Detroit is home to so many great musicians and they chose Nickelback?!?!?! Does anyone even like Nickelback?

Want to sign it? Change.org.

This is important, you guys! Seriously though, there really are SO MANY amazing musicians/artists working in Detroit, especially now.
