Andrew Bird and Ian Schneller’s Sonic Arboretum (MCA Chicago)

A collection of horned speakers, made from compressed recycled newsprint and dryer lint, created by sculptor and instrument-maker Ian Schneller and composer/violinist Andrew Bird, are installed in the MCA’s atrium to create a unique sound garden. Bird records the initial compositions on-site at the MCA and sends musical information to different groups of horns via multiple loops.

Sound garden? Sign us up.

Andrew Bird used to hold a very significant place in my heart, but it’s been a while since we’ve adventured together.  I think in my upcoming 15 hour drive we will end up becoming reacquainted. I have missed him.

Fake conversations on a nonexistent telephone
Like the words of a man who’s spent a little too much time alone
When one has spent too much time alone

So will you come to burn my effigy?
It should keep the flies away
If you long to burn an effigy
It should be of a man who has lost his way, slips away

Songs That Make Me Happy: Tables and Chairs - Andrew Bird, The Mysterious Production Eggs [2005]

I know we’re going to meet some day
in the crumbled financial institutions of this land
there will be tables and chairs
there’ll be pony rides and dancing bears
there’ll even be a band
‘cause listen, after the fall there will be no more countries
no currencies at all, we’re gonna live on our wits
we’re gonna throw away survival kits,
trade butterfly-knives for adderal
and that’s not all
ooh-oh, there will be snacks there will
there will be snacks, there will be snacks.

I mean, come ON guys! The world is ending, but it’s okay, because there will be snacks! Plus, I suppose it also makes me happy because it makes me think of one of the best concert-experiences as I got to go with some super-great people, including my good friend Stephanie and her now-fiancé Ben! And I listened to a LOT of Andrew Bird the summer I moved to Wyoming, which was a very happy time.

Andrew Bird at TED 2010

Musical innovator Andrew Bird winds together his trademark violin technique with xylophone, vocals and sophisticated electronic looping. Add in his uncanny ability to whistle anything, and he becomes a riveting one-man orchestra.

Margaret Cho - I’m Sorry (featuring Andrew Bird)

What a bizarre crossover.  The video is also directed by Liam Sullivan of Kelly fame.  I can’t say I’m digging the song all that much, but the oddity of it all deserves a post.

I am continually amazed by the people Margaret Cho seems to know and be friends with.  If the song was a lot more funny I could forgive the country twang, but it’s actually kind of lame, and that just makes me sad because I do really love the Cho, but I have absolutely no intention of getting this album.

thanks for making my wet dreams come true.

Andrew Bird and Yo Yo Ma.

Cuteness abounds. This is pretty much the best thing I’ve ever seen.

Yes.  Yes to this x 1000.  My life needs more cello and violin jam sessions.

Regina Spektor to Write Broadway Musical

strangetimes:

Singer Finds Beauty in Fairytale Adaptation

As reported by Playbill, songstress Regina Spektor is taking her quirk to the Great White Way.  The singer/songwriter is set to collaborate with writer Tina Landau and lyricist Michael Korie on Beauty— a modern take on Grimm fairytale, Sleeping Beauty.  As described by Playbill, the the play is “an expansion of Landau’s 2002 acclaimed one-act play produced by the La Jolla Playhouse; Beauty uses the 1812 Grimm fairy tale Sleeping Beauty as a jumping off point for a contemporary and hauntingly provocative story of beauty lost and beauty found.”  The production is slated for a spot in the 2011-2012 Broadway season.

In other Regina Spektor news, the musician is set for an October 10th performance on Saturday Night Live. | NME via UnderTheRadar

Seems about right!  That’s adorable.  And I don’t know for sure, but I think I read that her SNL is the one Drew’s hosting, so that’s cool too.  As for other oddly exciting news, apparently Margaret Cho’s now working a musical comedy album?  Involving Andrew Bird?

gah! this is some really awesome music news!

Andrew Bird reminds me that the world is beautiful and unfair

absurdlakefront:

Beautiful because he is in it making some intricate and radiant music.  Unfair because so much talent and beauty is concentrated so thoroughly in just one person.  Love him.

It was amazing seeing him in such a small venue with no more than a couple of hundred people.  The last time I saw him was sold out at the Civic Opera House where I was in an upper balcony, and this time he was no more than 20 feet away.

A very good way to end the day.

I have only had the pleasure of seeing Andrew Bird once, but it was also in a very small venue and I was mere feet away from where he was as well.  In this respect, I think maybe I’m kind of glad I didn’t see him when he came to the Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor where I would have had to sit in the balcony really far away.  I enjoy my memory of being so close to him and that intimate atmosphere of people talking quietly and the sticky beer-covered floor and everyone yelling “There will be snacks!”

Andrew Bird - Fitz and Dizzyspells

I love this song, but it’s been stuck in my head on repeat since it played at work the other day.  The air was broken and I was boiling to death back in the fitting room. I cranked the volume and it cheered me up for a good 3 and a half minutes.

Weird, I was just about to post an Andrew Bird song, but I would rather reblog this one since it’s more current and also really awesome.  ALSO, super jealous that you get to hear good music while at work.  Even if only occasionally.  Hearing Mariah and Whitney and some dude singing about stalking his ex’s all day while boiling in my own skin is starting to make me extra irritable all the live long day.

Video

And, why not.  I’ll post the other video for the This American Life—Live! event as well.  It’s a really interesting and beautiful animation titled “Quimby the Mouse” by the sometimes-controversial Chris Ware [animation by John Kuramoto] featuring the song “Eugene” by Andrew Bird’s Bowl of Fire.

Fake Palindromes - Andrew Bird (via)

One of my all-time favorite songs.  Maybe my top favorite.

this had been my favorite andrew bird song [and thereby pretty much my favorite song period] for the longest time, until i saw him in concert and “tables and chairs” happened.  then i realized that nothing can ever beat an entire crowd of people chanting “there will be snacks”

Video

Andrew Bird’s latest video, for the song “Fitz and the Dizzy Spells”, is super fun and features the Mucca Pazza Marching Band who I have been in awe of ever since I first saw them….somewhere.  Maybe some late night show or something, I don’t even know.  But they’re incredible [and very cabaret-esque].  And this video is pretty great.  Plus you should all know my thoughts on the bird man.

Besides, of course, him being orgasmically mind-blowingly talented, I hope I’m not the only person who also thinks he’s beautiful in a very real and shallow way.  I’m so excited to see him in concert again!
